Breakdown
The following design samples were used for internal company designs, commercial art and conceptual design use.
What goal am I trying to achieve?
The goal I am trying to achieve is a dramatic, cinematic composition that can work as a static image or a animated Ad. To reach this goal I chose to use 3-D modeling, Digital Painting, Digital Illustration, and Compositing. *NOTE: I WILL NOT BE DOING A 3D MODELING TUTORIAL*
Programs used:
Autodesk Maya - 3D modeling, texture mapping and rendering.
Adobe Illustrator - Logos, icons and labels
Adobe Photoshop - Compositing all assets, building final texture maps and exporting images.
Starting Off
I start the scene in Photoshop Using a photograph I took of a wall. I wanted an interesting texture with dirt and grim.
Creating Perspective
I copied the background to another layer. Next, I placed the copied background layer on top. I use the perspective, and scale transform to give the illusion of depth and space.
Creating Depth with Lighting and Shadows
On a new layer I painted in shadows. I set the blending mode to multiply. Next, I created another layer and paint in a few highlights. Finally I select all texture layers, shadow, highlights and convert those layers into a smart object.
Creating Popcorn Basket
I modeled a simple popcorn basket in Maya.
Texture Map Popcorn Basket
I textured mapped the popcorn basket using Photoshop, Illustrator and Maya.
Rendering Popcorn Basket
Popcorn Basket was rendered using a HDRI Image. A technique called Image Based Lighting (IBL). Rendering Engine: Mental Ray.
Creating Cup
I modeled a simple cup in Maya.
Texture Map Cup
I texture mapped the cup with Photoshop, Illustrator and Maya.
Rendering Cup
The cup was rendered with an HDRI image. This technique is called Image Based Lighting (IBL). Rendering Engine: Mental Ray.
Creating Cracks in Ground
The cracks in the ground were made using Maya Dynamics. I Attached a nurb circle as the controller with an aim constraint. Next, I rendered the scene with Maya Software. The render will be used as a multiply layer in Photoshop.
Placing Popcorn Basket and Popcorn Assets
I used the render of the popcorn basket from Maya (tiff) and a masked out photograph of popcorn to creat bakset and popcorn asset. The shadow was created with a selection of both items filled with black and blurred. Next, I turn the shadow layer's blend mode to multiply.
Placing Cup Assets
I used the render of the cup from Maya (tiff) and a masked out photograph of soda to creat the cup and beverage asset. The shadow was created with a selection of both items filled with black and blurred. Next, I turn the shadow layer's blend mode to multiply.
Cooling the Temperature of the Image
Blue hue with the blending mode set to overlay.
Placing Cracks
I placed the render of the cracks into the comp, turned the saturation all the way down to make it gray scale. Then set a blending mode set to multiply.
Placing Hammer Asset
I masked out the hammer from a photograph and placed it behind the cracks layer. Next, I painted in shadows to capture a more dramatic look.
